DJ Stenting Surgery
A double-J stent is a hollow, plastic tube with curved ends on both sides. Medical professionals temporarily place it in the ureter to act as a conduit to pass urine from the kidney to the bladder. One end is placed in the kidney, while the other goes into the bladder.
They usually insert stents after performing surgery in the urinary tract to allow the healing process. Alternatively, they may also use it to relieve pain due to stones in the ureter.
Sometimes, it is a basic requirement to insert a DJ or Double J stent as part of a surgery. Such minor procedures, when done correctly, can improve recovery and reduce postoperative complications.
How is Double J Stent Placed: Before, During and After.
Before placing the DJ stent, doctors diagnose the obstruction in the ureter using a cystoscope and imaging techniques like computed tomography and ultrasound.
They may ask the patient to undergo investigations like chest x-ray and electrocardiograms before administering anaesthesia.
During the procedure, healthcare professionals give general anaesthesia to the patient. They introduce a cystoscope into the urethra and advance it into the bladder.
On reaching the ureteral orifice, they will insert a thin wire into the ureter through the cystoscope. Then, place a stent over the wire. Finally, they verify the exact location of the stent using a fluoroscope.
After the procedure is complete, the patient may experience mild discomfort in the groin area. The doctor will prescribe painkillers for pain and antibiotics to prevent infection.
