What is Valproic Acid?
Valproic Acid is used to treat certain types of seizures (epilepsy). It belongs to the class of medication called anticonvulsant and is useful in preventing seizures in individuals with absence seizures, partial seizures, and generalized seizures. It is also used to treat manic phases in bipolar disorder and prevent migraine headaches. Valproic acid is available in different formulations and is sold as a prescription medicine only.
Valproic acid can also be prescribed to control outbursts of aggression in children with ADHD.
Common side effects of Valproic Acid are drowsiness, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, constipation, changes in appetite, weight changes, back pain, agitation, mood swings, abnormal thinking, uncontrollable shaking of a body part, problems with walking or coordination, uncontrollable movements of the eyes, blurred or double vision, ringing in the ears and hair loss.
