What is Blood Sugar Test?

A blood sugar test is a method that determines the amount of sugar in your blood, often known as glucose. This test may be ordered by your doctor to help in the diagnosis of diabetes. This test can also be used to control your blood sugar levels if you are a diabetic.

Blood sugar tests provide instant results and tell you what you need to know, such as whether your blood sugar levels are high or low if your medications are working properly, and whether your doctor can meet the treatment goals.

A blood sugar test may also be ordered as part of a standard procedure by your doctor to discover whether you have diabetes or prediabetes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A blood sugar test is used to diagnose diabetes. Usually, your doctor will recommend it when they suspect an increase or decrease in the level of sugar in your blood. It is also routinely used for diabetics to monitor their blood sugar levels.

The normal blood sugar level is less than 140 mg/dL. A blood sugar level between 140 mg/dL and 200 mg/dL indicates prediabetes. You may have diabetes if your blood sugar level is greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL.

Fluctuation in blood sugar levels may cause hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. It may also indicate diabetes. Once your doctor identifies the symptoms, they might advise you to undergo this test to identify the exact condition. This also helps the doctor to prepare a treatment plan for you.

A simple blood sugar test can be done at home or in a clinic by your doctor. It involves the use of a glucose meter. The meter displays the quantity of sugar in a small sample of blood that you place on a disposable test strip, generally from your fingertip. You may receive findings in less than 15 seconds and save the data for further use.

A blood sugar level lower than 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) is considered normal.

There are several types of blood sugar tests available in the market.

    •  HbA1C Test- It is also known as the haemoglobin A1c test. It measures your average blood sugar level of the past 2- to 3 months
    • Fasting Blood Sugar Test
    • Glucose Tolerance Test
    • Random Blood Sugar Test
    • Glucose Screening Test
    • Glucose Tolerance Test

Depending on the need, your doctor might advise you on any of the above tests to check your blood sugar level. The most commonly recommended tests are the haemoglobin A1c test and fasting blood sugar test.

You may need to check your blood sugar multiple times during the day. When you first wake up (fasting), before a meal, 2 hours after a meal, and before bedtime are all good times to check your blood sugar. Ask your doctor when and how often you should check your blood sugar.

The warning signs of prediabetes include excessive hunger, increased urination and thirst, constant fatigue, tingling or numbness in your fingers or toes, and blurred vision.

Borderline diabetes is more commonly known as prediabetes. Prediabetes is a condition that develops before you get type 2 diabetes. A blood sugar level that ranges between 140 mg/dL and 200 mg/dL is considered to be borderline.

The symptoms of high blood sugar may vary from mild to moderate and moderate to a severe rise in blood sugar level.
