What is Drotin?

Drotin (drotaverine) is an antispasmodic medicine. It is prescribed for relieving the pain caused by dysfunctional smooth muscle fibers.

Antispasmodics is a class of medicine used to relieve spasms of involuntary muscles. Drotin helps relax the muscles and gives effective relief from pain, cramps, spasms, and twitches by soothing these sudden contractions.

Drotin can be taken with or without food. It’s advisable to take it at the same time every day. Its dosage and frequency depend on what you are taking it for. This will be best advised by your doctor.

What are the uses of Drotin?

Drotin is used to treat painful conditions like:

  • Dysmenorrhea (extreme and frequent menstrual cramps)

    Yes, Drotin is a pain killer. It contains drotaverine, a category of medicine that helps in relieving pain caused due to spasms. It is widely used to alleviate abdominal pain, cramping in periods, muscular spasms, colic due to stones in the kidney and gallbladder, or pain in smooth muscles of other organs.

    It is not advisable to consume Drotin DS during pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding. There is limited information and clinical data available on the effect of this drug on the fetus when it crosses the placental barrier. Hence, Drotin DS should not be used if you are pregnant. Consult your doctor to get a safer alternative as per your clinical condition.

    Drotaverine is an antispasmodic medicine that relieves contractions of smooth muscles. Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). You can combine them to effectively alleviate pain and inflammation caused by various conditions. This salt combination helps to treat, control, and relieve menstrual cramps, joint stiffness, back and dental pain, pain and swelling, gout attacks, sports injuries, muscle aches, functional bowel disorders, and pain in renal colic.

    Drotin is to be used with caution in patients having chronic liver disease (CLD). If at all given, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate dose and advise safety monitoring. Drotin has shown harmful side effects in patients suffering from liver-related ailments. Under no circumstances should Drotin be consumed indiscriminately by patients suffering from liver conditions.

    Drotin or drotaverine in combination with any other drug should not be used in patients having chickenpox or other viral infections. Do not use antispasmodics like drotin and aspirin-based drugs to treat chickenpox. Usually, drugs like acetaminophen are recommended instead. Always consult a doctor before starting medication for chickenpox.

    Drotin can be taken with or without food. However, to avoid any adverse gastric consequences, it is advisable to take Drotin after meals.
