COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions:
Is MUCOR mycosis also seen in western countries in post COVID period or is it mainly seen in India?
Mucormycosis is a very rare aggressive fungal infection caused by exposure to mucor mould found commonly in soil, plants, manure, rotten fruits/vegetables.
The rise in mucormycosis has been perceived globally, but comparatively, prevalence is high in developing countries due to the high incidence of Diabetes mellitus, tuberculosis and other associated diseases. In developed countries, it is linked to patients with high immunosuppression in malignancies and transplants. Also, the lack of Global surveillance on the disease makes it hard to understand the prevalence of this disease.
