Boutonniere Deformity is a condition wherein the fingers of hands or toes become deformed. In this condition, the joint is closest to the knuckle i.e. the proximal interphalangeal joint is permanently bent towards the palm whereas the farthest joint i.e. distal interphalangeal joint is bent backward.

This condition is usually caused due to a forceful impact on the dorsal side of the middle joint of a finger. Other causes may include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Finger dislocation
  • Finger fractures
  • Deep cuts to the fingers
