What is Discoid Meniscus?

Discoid meniscus is a rare condition that affects the lateral meniscus present in the knee. It sometimes may present itself in the form of swelling, pain and cracking sound of the affected knee.

What are the types of Discoid Meniscus?

There are 3 common types of discoid meniscus affecting the knees.

  • Incomplete: In this type, the meniscus is somewhat thicker and wider than normal.
  • Complete: The tibia is entirely covered by the meniscus
  • Hypermobile Wrisberg: It occurs when the ligaments that attach the meniscus to the femur and tibia are absent.

Discoid Meniscus Causes

What are the causes of Discoid Meniscus?

This condition is a congenital defect, which means that it is present from birth in individuals. However, there are other causes which include continuous, rapid, and twisting motions to the knee and fast changes in direction (common in sports). Along with this age and injuries may also, sometimes, result in having discoid meniscus amongst individuals.
