10 Most Common Symptoms of Gastritis

Gastritis is the inflammation of stomach lining most widely caused by the bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori. This is a kind of weakness in the stomach lining that allows digestive juices to damage and inflame. Having a thin or damaged stomach lining raises the risk for gastritis. Gastritis is one of the perilous problems that can create a significant impact in an individuals daily life. Since the stomach lining gets thin with age, people above 60 years are more likely get affected with the infection.

Gastritis can be acute (occurs for a short period of time) or chronic (long-lasting) depending upon the causes and its intensity. Here are the 10 most common symptoms of Gastritis that should not be neglected.

1. Frequent Stomach upset

It’s a sensation of uneasiness and discomfort in the upper stomach caused by indigestion. There are plenty of reasons for stomach upset but it’s not a good sign when you are facing it on a regular basis. Perhaps, you may be at the verge of Gastritis.

2. Abdominal Pain

Abdominal Pain is the distress caused in the region below the ribs and above the pelvis. Abdomen includes intestines, appendix, stomach, liver, kidneys, gall bladder, and pancreas. Pain might possibly result into serious illness in the long-run.

Loose or watery stools about 4-5 times a day is not normal. Look for bloody and extremely foul- smelling, black tarry bowel movements. If ignored, Diarrhea makes us feel really sick. During this phase, H.Pylori bacteria will obstruct stomach and intestinal tract’s regular functions.

5. Belching

Belching is the other word of burping where stomach expels excess air from the mouth to reduce the tightness. If burping continues for long time after every meal and doesn’t releases the sensation of fullness in stomach, seek out medical help immediately.

6. Bloating

Bloating is the feeling of swelling in the abdomen region. It is often accompanied by severe pain caused by the air and gas filled in the digestive tract. Prolonged bloating can interfere and disrupts the digestive system.

7. Early Satiety

Early Satiety is the lack of ability to eat a complete normal-sized meal. During this phase, we eat very less than usual and feel full very soon. This may also result into weakness as we are not providing the body with sufficient calories.

8. Loss Appetite

Medically called as Anorexia, loss of appetite can cause sudden weight loss and malnutrition. Generally there will be a vomiting sensation after eating. It will interrupt the food processing cycle and can cause muscle atrophy.

9. Feeling Faint

People faint when they don’t get enough oxygen to the brain. We lose consciousness for a short period, feel dizzy and weak. In Gastritis, feeling faint is accompanied with nausea, burning in stomach and tiredness.

10.Rapid Heartbeat

Increased stomach inflammation and hovering anxiety can increase the blood pressure. Heart rate of more than 100 BPM is considered to be rapid among the adults. Shortness of breath, palpitations and chest pain are the other signs to watch out for.

Though in the initial stages, the symptoms of gastritis and problems seem to be very trivial but it may lead to severe health issues. If left untreated, Gastritis may result into ulcers, stomach bleeding or stomach cancer. During this age of advance technology and high-end medical facilities we should not take any chances. Gastritis is 100% curable, all you need to do is undergo proper diagnostics and follow the prescribed medication.
In the recent times, it is reported that Gastritis is growing at an exponential rate especially in Indian sub-continent. Reducing alcohol consumption, avoiding spicy foods and being aware of symptoms are few factors that can help prevent Gastritis.
Recurrently if you notice any such symptoms of gastritis and not so sure what’s wrong, it’s time to see your Gastroenterologist.

  • Last day late at night, while going to bath room, i felt that my brain is disconnected from the rest of my body. I managed it with great difficulty to reach bath room. When i came back after passing my stool and went on bed, I again felt the same. Now what i have noticed myself is that when i get up after lying on the bed, my head/brain feels disconnected or absent from rest of the body. But if i stay seatedon some sofa or chair for a long time, i am ok but as soon as lay on the ground or bed and then get up, the problem arises. what is this? plz guide me.
    Regards

  • I’m dizzy always for the past 1year with chronic reflux and I’m losing my appetite is this a common reflux symptom. And consulted a ENT specialist I have no vertigo.

  • Two years ago I was diagnosed with H.pylori at a count of 2100, along with mild duodenal ulcers. It was eradicated with the usual triple therapy, with confirmation of clearance of H.pylori and cancer via gastroscope.
Lately I have been feeling many of the same symptoms (fatigue, tiredness, head fog, gnawing stomach, lower abdomen bloating and gas). Can the H.pylori return, or can chronic gastritis cause the same symptoms?

    • Dear Mr. David, Yes, sometimes H.pylori infection may recur. However, it is advised you consult the gastroenterologist for a complete evaluation. Please write to us at info@yashodamail.com along with contact number and we will get in touch with you.

  • I’ve been unwell for a year now stomach hurts chest hurts flu like symptoms feeling weak I’ve been given different types of anti acids still unwell I have had a ct scan all ok ultra sound all ok and a camera down my throat and that come back mild gastritis?

  • I have gerd and developed some pretty bad stomach issues including shortness of breath, I went to the hospital and everything came back good..I was diagnosed with mild gastritis..My stomach litterly feels swollen, I can't even lay on my back..It sucks.. Unfortunately I don't currently have a primary doctor..I mentioned the possibility of it being due to h pylori and the doctor told me that is rare..So they basically just sent me home with 40mg protonix..I doubt this bacteria will go away it self.. Also I read Prilosec is approved for treatment of h pylori but protonix is not..So I'm debating if I'm better off taking 40mg of Prilosec instead of 40mg protonix.. Now I'm in discomfort day after day, I have a hard time catching my breath after small chores, I'm always bloated, no appetite, dizzy, weak etc..I'm stuck self medicating, using herbal teas such as green tea with ginger (added honey), chamomile,as well as milk Kefir as I'm trying to fill my gut with healthy bacteria.. Some of this does give me relief...I have also been doing a lot of meditation and taking cold showers to try and offset my anxiety which has been going nuts..I really hope I start to feel better soon because it's unbeatable at times..

  • I have been facing gastric problem since last 3-4 days. I have completely lost my appetite, slowly loosing my weight and experiencing continuous abdominal pain and discomfort as well even though I took medicine. Now all I can feel is pain and weakness. Please help asap.

But then after getting up, it felt really bad. At night, while trying to sleep, I got really scared about it so my heart rate increased and legs were shaking. After vomiting once, I felt a bit better so I slept. I am feeling the same discomfort today and it gets better when I walk but feels tight when I apply pressure on upper abdomen or sit crouched down. I feel a bit weak too. I also feel a little pain in middle/lower back today. I did not eat much today. Please help.
